Coyote Chase
COYOTE CHASE SPRING 2023 FUNDRAISER
To Help Fund Para Positions at Shelton in 2023-24
With projected 2023-24 enrollment numbers at Shelton, Shelton is not able to fully fund all of the positions and resources our staff and families value. Shelton has prioritized full time Art, Music, PE, full time DTL (Digital Teacher Librarian), Mental Health Support, and a Learning Coach, based on results from the budget survey. This does not leave sufficient funding for our paraprofessional (para) positions, which were also highly ranked on the budget survey by both staff and families.
Paras are teacher’s assistants, leading small group extensions and interventions, helping provide the wrap around supports that students need individually. They also help with material preparations, teacher planning time, teacher lunch breaks, and so much more.
The National PTA bylaws do not allow PTAs to fund FTE (full time equivalent) positions. However, PTAs are able to help fund para positions. Many schools have taken this approach. At the February PTSA General Meeting and at the March School Accountability Committee (SAC) Meeting, membership unanimously approved an extra fundraiser this Spring 2023 to raise support for our para positions at Shelton for 2023-24. We feel that para positions are essential to provide our students and educators with the best learning/teaching environment.
PTSA is excited to bring back The Coyote Chase Fundraiser this Spring.
100% of the funds raised will support para positions at Shelton in 2023-24.
Our Spring 2023 Coyote Chase Fundraising Goal is to raise a net $25,000.
The Shelton PTSA and SAC are working collaboratively to raise $50,000 to help support para positions in 2023-24 to avoid a reduction in para hours. PTSA membership has been able to allocate $10,000 from the 2022-23 Budget, funds so generously given in the Fall 2022 Direct Give. We are also pursuing community grants to further reduce the amount to be raised within our Shelton Community.
The Coyote Chase was a beloved and successful Shelton event for many years prior to 2020. All students are encouraged to gather pledges by asking family, friends, neighbors, or local businesses to sponsor them based on the number of laps they walk or run during the event, which is on the calendar for Monday, May 1st. Sponsors can pledge per lap or make a flat donation. It is a healthy way to earn money for Shelton while having lots of fun.
Incentive Prizes!

The Shelton PTSA in collaboration with our SAC is also writing to our Jeffco School Board to make them aware of this funding gap. Jeffco Public Schools has created a standard for what thriving student and educator experiences look like. Their goal is that all Jeffco Schools meet these standards by 2025. Based on their standards of excellence Shelton is and has been a thriving school, but the current Student Based Budget does not provide sufficient funding to maintain that standard of excellence without our community’s support. PTSA and SAC will continue to advocate that Jeffco provide all schools with a budget that allows them to provide the resources that our students and educators need to thrive and be successful.
The Spring Coyote Chase is a special fundraiser to specifically help fund para positions at Shelton in 2023-24. The PTSA Board does plan to host a separate Fall Fundraiser to fund the PTSA annual budget for 2023-24, which allows PTSA to host a number of events such as STEM Fair, Reflections, Talent Show, Heritage Fair, Read-a-thon, Field Day, and so much more. The PTSA annual budget also helps fund classroom supports, enrichment classes, field trips, teacher appreciation, Health & Wellness events, STEM and Library supports, etc.
We are so thankful for our Shelton Community for always being there to enhance the learning environment for our students and educators at Shelton Elementary!
