Kindergarten FAQs
Many families have questions regarding their child's kindergarten experience. We would like to answer some of the most frequently asked questions.

How do I enroll my child at Shelton?
Visit shelton.jeffcopublicschools.org and click the Enroll tab. Resources on transportation, allergy/medication protocols, and supply lists are also available there.
Is Kindergarten free?
Yes! Full-day Kindergarten is funded by Colorado and is free to all families.
When will I learn my child's teacher?
The school shares teacher assignment information approximately one week before school starts, along with any special events for Kindergarten families.
YOUR SCHOOL DAY
School hours
Students may enter the building at 7:30am. First bell at 7:40am; school begins at 7:45am. School ends at 2:35pm.
What should I expect the first few weeks?
Many students are exhausted after school in the first weeks of Kindergarten. Even if your child hasn't napped in years, they may
need quiet time or even a nap! Many families also bring a healthy snack to pickup.
Do Kindergartners get snacks?
Your teacher will email the first week about snack routines and any classroom allergies. Shelton generally encourages a whole fruit or vegetable snack.
LUNCH
How does lunch work?
Your child may bring lunch from home or receive lunch FREE in the cafeteria. View menus and set up an account for a la carte items at schoolcafe.com/JEFFCOSD.
FEES & SUPPORT
What if I need help covering student expenses?
Families are encouraged to complete the Student Benefits Application to waive student fees, field trips, and other costs. Learn more at: jeffcopublicschools.org/services/food-nutrition-services/student-benefits

GETTING AROUND
What if my child rides the bus?
Many children love the independence of riding the bus! Bus riders receive a bus band the first few weeks of school to ensure they board the correct bus and exit at the right stop.
How does pickup work?
Parents maintain a one-way loop through the parking lot and stay in their vehicle — teachers and staff escort your child to your car. Families who walk typically meet at the entrance to the Shelton Community Garden. Kindergarteners are released from a nearby door, often a few minutes before the 2:35pm bell.

Is there childcare before or after school?
Before and after care is offered through the YMCA: denver-ymca.my.site.com/s/registration
After-school enrichment programs
Shelton offers enrichment programming in 6–8 week sessions throughout the year. Info is sent home in Friday folders. Families
register for these programs on Konstella.
GETTING INVOLVED
Can I volunteer in my child's classroom?
Yes! Your teacher will share opportunities once classroom routines are established, typically starting in late September. The PTSA also offers many volunteer opportunities throughout the year.
Is there a directory for setting up playdates?

How do I join the PTSA?
